Each finger points in a different direction, and every love story follows its own trajectory. Two non-parallel lines are bound to intersect before separating.
One day, the thumb and index finger met. Strangely enough, they fell in love. Surprisingly, the index finger didn’t choose the middle finger, ring finger, or little finger; it chose the thumb instead.
So they both tried their best to keep their heads close together, even though it was tiring and sore from bending over, they never thought of separating. They loved each other earnestly and happily, despite the exhaustion… However, their different life paths led to vastly different lifestyles, and they often had significant differences. But despite their arguments, they continued to love each other with great effort and unwavering devotion.
Finally, one day, the index finger got tired and wanted to give up. She was a willful and selfish girl; she said she shouldn’t enjoy love because of her strong personality. But the thumb said, “This doesn’t show you have a strong personality, it’s just selfishness.” Perhaps it really was selfish, very selfish, but she decided: to give up! Despite the harshness, despite the selfishness… That day, the thumb said nothing.
Because he loved Index Finger so much. So much so that he would fulfill any of her requests, even a breakup without any reason! Although Thumb always longed for Index Finger to be more persistent and unwavering in love, to be as unafraid of hardship as he was, when he saw how much she suffered, his heart ached. He wanted the person he deeply loved to have the simplest happiness. Index Finger knew this love very well, very well. But she never said it. Because she was truly, truly lazy—too lazy to think, too lazy to speak, too lazy to love so painstakingly.
The thumb and forefinger are less than a foot apart, yet it is precisely this few centimeters that creates a deep emotional chasm between two people. No matter how grand the vows of love, they seem to be separated by countless obstacles, rendering true love pale and helpless… Have you noticed? This cruel reality exists.
The thumb and forefinger can never truly touch. There will always be a gap, more or less, just like the inherent, unavoidable distance between two people. Especially in winter, when it’s always so cold. They often wear thick gloves, separating them into two worlds. Love, too, dissipates into two different skies. And so, the love between the thumb and forefinger, gradually grows cold, and then disappears.
Thumb and index finger, that’s how they fell in love, so simply. Then, they separated, so simply. The initial joy and novelty have long since become yellowed memories in their diaries. But they were unable to experience the ultimate happiness and companionship.
All of this is simply because they are pointing in different directions…
